Massage Frequently Asked Questions

 Massage FAQ | Acupuncture FAQ
Who will perform the massage or bodywork?

A professional massage therapist will perform the massage or bodywork, often using a variety of techniques. All massage and bodywork practitioners are properly licensed and certified.

Are there any medical conditions that would make massage or bodywork inadvisable?

Before you begin your session, the therapist will ask you some health questions. It's very important that you inform the practitioner of any health problems or medications you are taking. If you are under doctors' care, it is strongly recommended that you tell the therapist so that they can contact him or her if necessary.

How long will the sessions last?
A 30 minute appointment allows time for a local treatment such as upper back/ shoulders/neck OR legs/feet. A 45-minute treatment allows for two segments such as upper back/neck as well as low back/hips. A one-hour treatment is used for a full body relaxation massage or added attention to particular areas. Your session is designed by your therapist and agreed upon before your treatment. If you are not sure how much time you need, we can help you decide upon making your appointment. If you have never had a massage before and are unsure of your needs, we suggest you be seen for a 30-minute session.
Are there different kinds of massage and bodywork?

There are many types of massage and bodywork techniques; various techniques utilize different stokes, including basic rubbing stokes, rocking, movements for posture reeducation, application of pressure to specific points, etc. Ask the practitioner about the methods he or she uses.

Will lubricant be used?

A light amount of oil or cream is used to allow the muscle to be worked gently without excessive friction to the skin. The lubricants used should hydrate the skin and be readily absorbed. If you are allergic to a nut or oil, please tell your therapist so they can adjust the session to accommodate your allergy.

What parts of my body will be massaged?

You and the therapist will discuss and design the desired outcome of the massage treatment. This will determine which parts of your body require massage. A typical full body treatment will include work on your back, shoulders, arms, hands, legs, feet, neck and head.

Will I be covered during the treatment?

A clean sheet will properly drape you at all times to keep you comfortable. Only the area being worked on will be uncovered. For your added comfort, our tables are heated and extra blankets are supplied.

Will the therapist be present when I disrobe?

The therapist will leave the room while you undress and cover yourself with a clean sheet or towel. At this time you will begin to relax, and the therapist will knock before entering the room.

Must I be completely undressed?

Most massage table treatments are traditionally performed with the client unclothed, only wearing underpants; however, you may decide what amount of clothing you would like to wear for your own comfort. The therapist can work through your clothes. Gowns are also provided. Chair massage is performed fully dressed.

What kind of Clinical Massage appointment do I book?

Due to the variety of muscular problems we encounter, we do not limit our scope to a single technique. Everyone is different; therefore as the treatment evolves, the method of technique is determined. For example: An “Active Release Technique” (A.R.T.) may work well on your shoulder problem, but Sports Massage or Neuromuscular Therapy (NMT) work may provide a better result on someone else.
